This element, long tamed by human laws,
But nourishing an ancient appetite,
Is challenging humanity to fight,
And brandishing its terrible red claws.
While solid branches, flaring up like straws,
Fill all the forest with unholy light,
The monster ramps and rages through the night,
The awesome head of Nature's carnivores.
And of the wave of terror that entrains
A fierce destruction in its deathly sweep,
Now only silent desolation reigns,
With skeletons that hardly seem to keep
The form of trees, the saddened, black remains
Of woods, no longer lovely, dark or deep.
